UNDERCOVER AW04 "But Beautiful" Handmade Trousers
DETAILS
Jun Takahashi embarked on a creative collaboration with French artist Anne-Valérie Dupond, who is known for her artistry in crafting sculptures from salvaged textiles, needle, and threads. These trousers from the Autumn/Winter 2004 “But Beautiful” collection is a piece where every detail tells a story. The buttons seem to have gone on a whimsical journey, with trinkets randomly adorning the placket, as though they were initially lost and then thoughtfully replaced. The thin layer battings along the waistband and hems, the fabric buttons on the back, the crooked stitching and curved seams, are crafted to echo the construction techniques seen in Dupond's “stuff-animal like” sculptures. Also, just like many other trousers in Takahashi's 'But Beautiful' collection, they feature a subtle lightning bolt embroidery on the knee, referencing his muse, the iconic Patti Smith, and her legendary tattoo.
"But Beautiful" was a series spanning from 2004 to 2006 that embodied Jun Takahashi's penchant for blending diverse influences and pushing the boundaries of fashion. It sought to challenge traditional notions of beauty and celebrate the raw and unconventional aspects of life and creativity. The juxtaposition of contrasting elements and the emotional depth of the collection made it a standout moment in Undercover's history.
