UNDERCOVER SS03 "Scab" Patchwork Shorts

EDITOR’S NOTE

Jun Takahashi was previously disappointed by the media’s lack of support, while Rei Kawakubo approached Jun after seeing only one of his shows, and encouraged him to bring his vision to the international stage. Thus, the iconic Undercover Spring/Summer 2003 collection was presented at Paris Fashion week, marking the brand’s first venture outside of Japan. “Scab” is filled with the themes of crust punk culture, tribal elements, and DIY. It’s unorthodox aesthetics and underlying references made a lasting impact to the fashion world today. Here’s an article by Riv Casino which further analyzes this collection.

DETAILS

Seen on Undercover Spring/Summer 2003 collection runway. These transformable skirt/shorts features more than 40 stitched-on patches throughout. Each “scab” patch is individually hand-sewn onto the garment, with unique fabric textures and patterns, as well as different colors of dangling threads. The distinctive construction is what makes the shorts stand out. Cut with an extremely wide rise and roomy thigh, with a YKK zipper along the crotch that can fully open the entire inseam, thus transforming the garment between shorts and skirt. Other details include two inside-out pockets with zip closure on the back, two flap pockets an fold-up hem secured by patches, “fake” fly placket and zipper-teeth detailing along waist. Body 57% cotton, 30% rayon, 13% linen; pocket cloth 100% cotton. Made in Japan.
